I was collaborating with them that day, alongside my good friend Melanie Philp of Your True Nature Counselling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhen I asked Serena if she had managed to reach anyone who needed Sunrise through our collaboration, Mel tapped me on the shoulder and said, \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e“Yes, me.”\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eNeedless to say, this brought a tear to my eye.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor the artwork, I painted Wings, a famous seal my friend Nigel told me about. She regularly visits the harbour where I held the gathering and got her nickname from her beautiful markings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eOne day, local fishermen had to catch Wings to free her from an Aerobie frisbee that had become stuck around her neck. I almost burned out after Portishead. Up until this point, I had been running these events back-to-back every four days. By the time I arrived in Wales, I was a shell of the person who had started the tour, full of energy and excitement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI gave myself some time here to really take in something I had been missing on my journey: \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003ecommunity\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI found myself in Penarth, just outside the city, where I joined the Dawnstalkers for their daily sunrise dips. These beautiful souls held me, and I got to experience that wonderfully warm and welcoming Welsh hospitality. It was time for me to receive, to take stock, and to figure out a new plan for moving forward.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe tour would now evolve in so many ways, starting with a weekly schedule that gave me more time for myself and less pressure to constantly deliver. Gifting myself this time not only benefited my mental health, but also gave me experiences that would prove invaluable in shaping the events still to come.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor this piece, I limited the palette to vibrant neon colours and primed the background with a sunrise-inspired wash. He was lost from his herd and seemed to seek refuge within the local community. I thought his story was so fitting for the whole concept behind my campaign — lost people coming to my gatherings in the hope of finding friendship, connection and a community of their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eAlso, I painted him while I was in Liverpool… and I still can’t get that Beatles song out of my head. The bee now stands as a symbol of the incredible and life-saving work they do supporting people through dark times.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eAllana collaborated with me at the Thurso event and again during my time in Inverness. She later travelled to help me in Southend, and when Brighton came around, she did it again, travelling six hours and staying in a hotel with her amazing son Theo just so they could help me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI genuinely could not have done it without them. Getting all of the equipment from my van, along the seafront to the event and then all the way back again would have been almost impossible on my own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBrighton also tested me in ways I wasn’t expecting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBefore the event, I was attacked by someone who smashed the windscreen of my van. I had to get it repaired, pick myself back up and somehow find compassion for the person who had done me wrong.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThen, shortly after the event, my van’s engine decided it had reached the end of its life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI was exhausted, my van was broken, and suddenly I had to summon up the faith I’d been mantraing throughout this entire tour:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eEverything will be okay.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhat happened next became one of the greatest demonstrations of what this journey had created.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor months, I had travelled around the country bringing people together. Now, for the first time, I needed their help.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI sent an email to the people I’d met and connected with across the tour and set up a GoFundMe to help pay for a replacement engine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eWithin three days, the target was reached.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe community I had travelled around the country trying to support had turned around and supported me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eMy van was fixed, the journey could continue, and I was once again on my merry way — free as a bird.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhich brings us to the painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor Brighton, there could really only be one choice: a seagull, also inspired by Brighton \u0026amp; Hove Albion, affectionately known as \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003ethe Seagulls\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAnd, of course, being Brighton, this is the only painting from the entire tour with glitter in the background.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThank you for so many lessons, Brighton. They invited me along to one of their walks at Gorleston Beach, where I got to meet everyone. It turned out to be such an important connection.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAlthough I had originally planned to hold my event in Great Yarmouth, Gorleston suddenly seemed like the perfect place. There was a beautiful pavilion where we could hold the meditation and lovely grounds overlooking the ocean for the silent disco.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe event fell on the day after my birthday. My birthday is on the 2nd of January, which historically isn’t the greatest day for a party. Everyone is usually too hungover to do anything, or they’ve only got enough money left to buy me a pint, which generally results in me getting very messy. 🤣\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThis year couldn’t have been more different.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eOn the morning of the event, we had a thick flurry of snow and the whole place turned white. It inevitably put a lot of people off coming, but the Walk and Talk crew showed up with a gazebo, tables and enough cakes to make sure we had a party anyway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWe built snowmen. We had a snowball fight, silent disco style. We were also joined by five different mental health and community organisations, who came along to meet people, have conversations and share the support and services they offer.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThere was something incredibly powerful about seeing so many different people and organisations coming together in one place, all with that same sense of community and connection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhen it came to deciding what to paint on the Southend canvas, \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eorcas felt perfect\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eOrcas are one of the strongest symbols of community in the animal kingdom. I happened to arrive during an art festival, so I got to completely immerse myself in it all and fill my creative cup again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI held the event right on the beach, where a huge protective sand dune had been built between the sea and the seafront. It became the perfect landmark for us to dance on, giving us some incredible moments and footage overlooking the ocean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIt was another deeply emotional event. I met so many people who genuinely needed what we were creating that day, alongside some incredible people already doing amazing things in the mental health space. Those conversations and connections really stayed with me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThroughout the tour, I’d been asked countless times to paint a crab. Dawn even made it possible for me to bring my van right onto the promenade, which made setting everything up a dream.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWe had a fantastic turnout. Dover Smart Project brought along their own van, art supplies and plenty of enthusiasm, helping us create the collaborative masterpiece you see here today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor Dover, I chose to paint a \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003ehumpback whale\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e. Partly because I absolutely love painting humpbacks, but also because it felt strangely fitting for Dover. Huge, majestic ships are constantly arriving and departing its shores, much like these incredible migratory giants travelling vast distances across our oceans.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThere was another important side to the day too. Several mental health organisations came along, including those supporting people experiencing addiction. During my time in Dover, I met a number of people who were homeless and invited them personally to join us. Sadly, they didn’t make it to the event, but there were people struggling with addiction who did come by and were able to discover some of the incredible support available to them locally.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThat, for me, is a huge part of what these events were always about. Sometimes simply bringing the right people and organisations together in the same place can create a connection that might genuinely change someone’s life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eI’m really excited to see what the future holds between \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eYour Art Connect and Dover Smart Project\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e. I held it in the middle of St Andrew’s Mews, a closed-off forecourt surrounded by local shops, and we were kindly gifted the use of one of the empty shops to display all of the pieces I had created on the tour so far.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eHastings has a very special and unique community. It’s full of creatives, partygoers, colourful characters and, like many towns I visited, people who seem a little lost and in need of connection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eEarlier in the year, I had visited Hastings to promote the tour. It happened to be Pirate’s Day, and while I was there I met a brilliant character called Pirate Pete. Sitting proudly on his shoulder was a little sun conure called Mango.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhen it came time to complete the Hastings painting, I decided to honour Pirate Pete by painting his beautiful bird.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThen something rather strange happened.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eNot long after I had finished the painting, I was on the streets of Newquay promoting the exhibition and selling my work when I met a lovely lady. She stopped to look at Mango and told me that her daughter would absolutely love to see the piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhen her daughter arrived, she told me a story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eSome time before, she had met a sun conure and shared a really special moment with it. In the middle is what I can only describe as a Victorian folly, a circle of pillars that felt incredibly powerful to hold our meditation within.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eWhile scouting for a location, I met a homeless chap called Omar. He was the person who suggested I try this place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eAfter that, I didn’t see him again until the day before the event, when, completely by chance, I bumped into him in town. I was so grateful to be able to tell him that I’d taken his advice and chosen the gardens for the event. I invited him to come along.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eRight at the last minute, \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e\u003cb\u003ehe came.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eIt brought me to tears.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eOmar made some beautiful connections that day. I don’t know what happened in the next chapter of his journey, but I really hope that day gave him something and inspired him in some small way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThroughout this entire tour, people had been telling me I should apply for this fund or that grant to help pay for the tour and exhibition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eBut there was a reason I refused.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eYour Art Connect had lost all of its funding and was close to shutting its doors. Our directors had burned themselves out applying for funding bids and getting nothing back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eSo I made a decision.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eI wasn’t going to apply for funding for this tour.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI was going to do it myself. I was going to show the world what I could create, manifest the abundance I needed to complete the exhibition, and trust that eventually someone would see what I was doing and choose to invest in it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI even had the word \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eABUNDANCE\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e written on the whiteboard in my van, staring back at me every single day.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThen Bournemouth happened.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eAfter promoting the event, I received a message from a lady inviting me for a cup of tea. She said she had a proposal for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eIntrigued, of course I went.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eShe sat me down and told me that she loved what I was doing. She worked with an organisation that funded individuals and artists doing great things in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThen she asked me a very simple question:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e“What do you need?”\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI told her straight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI wanted to hold an exhibition in the middle of Shoreditch at my favourite venue, The Bike Shed. But in Torquay, I met people who had quietly been following the journey from afar. Hearing what it had meant to them reminded me of something far more important: \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003equality over quantity\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eLet’s face it, you can make a video of yourself picking your nose and somehow get two million views. But numbers don’t necessarily equal impact. Creating something that genuinely inspires someone, starts a meaningful conversation or helps people make conscious connections can reach far fewer people and still make a much greater difference in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThat feeling of connection seemed to follow me everywhere in Torquay. I was welcomed into someone’s home and given a place to rest, wash my clothes, charge my headphones and laptop, catch up on editing and simply recharge myself. While I was out selling prints and promoting the event, someone even appeared with a flask of tea and a care package full of goodies. These seemingly small acts of kindness meant the world to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThen I met Leanna.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThere was something about that meeting that gave me a strong intuition that the tour was about to reach further. Leanna began connecting me with people in the media and wellness world and has continued championing what I’m doing ever since. It was another reminder that you never really know which connection will create the next ripple.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor Torquay, I painted a whale shark. A gentle giant travelling enormous distances through the ocean, its impact isn’t made through noise or aggression, but simply through its presence. The weather wasn’t particularly kind to us, and at any one time there were perhaps only ten people there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBut Plymouth reminded me that numbers really don’t tell the whole story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe people who did show up came with some incredibly powerful stories. One lady in particular had been going through a period of physical and mental recovery and hadn’t left her house for over a year. She was also a keen artist, so I invited her to bring some of her work along and have her own little mini exhibition at the event.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAnd she did.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eShe didn’t stay for the whole day, but that didn’t matter. She had found the courage to leave the house, turn up and share something she’d created with a group of strangers. I was so proud of her. Sometimes simply showing up for yourself is the biggest victory of all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWe gathered on Plymouth Hoe, beneath the beautiful old ornate building affectionately known as the \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eWedding Cake\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e. Nearby, I noticed a small community of homeless people who had made their own refuge beneath one of the structures. Throughout the day people came and went, music played, paint was thrown and connections were made. When the event was supposed to finish, some of us simply carried on, listening to music together. By the end, it didn’t really feel like I’d hosted an event at all. It felt like a little bunch of friends playing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor Plymouth, I painted a pigeon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI’d been surrounded by these little creatures all week while living in the city and promoting the event. Pigeons are so commonplace that we barely notice them. They’re overlooked, dismissed and sometimes treated as though they don’t belong. But actually stop and look at one. Look closely at the incredible iridescent greens, purples and blues hidden amongst those grey feathers, and they’re absolutely beautiful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003ePerhaps that’s why the pigeon feels so right for Plymouth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIt was one of the smallest events of the tour, filled with people whose stories might easily go unnoticed in a busy world. Ironically, in trying to bring people together, I had put myself in one of the loneliest situations of my life.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor eight months, I travelled from community to community, staying just long enough to make connections before packing everything back into the van and starting again somewhere new. There were often days when I was completely by myself, without any meaningful human connection. It was a sacrifice I was willing to make because I believed in what I was doing — creating spaces where other people could come together and feel less alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor much of my life, I’ve felt like a square peg in a round hole. I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who love me and to have many wonderful friends, but I’ve still experienced that strange kind of loneliness that can exist even in a crowded room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI’ve also carried a feeling that perhaps there was something wrong with me. Something that made it difficult for me to receive love, or perhaps even believe that I deserved it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFalmouth challenged that belief.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eA woman came into my life there, and with her came her wonderful little daughter. Without going into a story that belongs to more than just me, that experience opened a part of my heart I hadn’t really understood before.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFor years, I’d never been completely sure whether becoming a father was something I wanted. Perhaps part of me simply couldn’t imagine myself in that role.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eNow I can.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFalmouth taught me something I hadn’t expected to learn while travelling the country trying to help other people feel less alone: \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eI was ready to let love into my own life too.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI don’t know when that next chapter will arrive, or what it will look like.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eBut now I know I’m ready for it, whenever it’s ready for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe event itself very nearly didn’t happen. I’d originally planned to hold it elsewhere, but the council told us we weren’t allowed to go ahead at that location. With just a day to go, I spent hours desperately searching for somewhere else, increasingly stressed that Falmouth might have to be abandoned altogether.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThen one of the directors of Your Art Connect suggested I speak to Castle Beach Café. They agreed almost instantly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe beach was still council land, so we decided to keep this one somewhat under the radar. But apparently secrets don’t stay secret for very long. Word spread, people arrived, the sun came out, and what had looked like it might not happen at all became a truly remarkable turnout on Castle Beach.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAnd amongst the people who came along was that woman, with her little one. It turned out to be exactly where we needed to be. I could drive the van straight into the field, set everything up from the front of it, and on a beautiful sunny day we gathered together for what became one of the most powerful moments of the entire tour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eA lady I’d met at the previous event in Falmouth joined us. She was an author who had written openly about her own journey and struggles with mental health, and had generously given me a collection of her books to hand out for free in the hope that her story might help somebody else.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eJust before we began the meditation, she asked if she could say a few words to the group, as she had done so inspiringly in Falmouth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAt the end of her talk, she shared something none of us were expecting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eJust five minutes earlier, she had received the news that her mum had passed away.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAlmost instinctively, the people around her moved towards her. Within seconds she was enveloped by the group in one enormous embrace. Of all the hugs and moments of connection I witnessed throughout this journey, I don’t think I’ve ever felt one quite as powerful as that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eShe showed extraordinary strength. She stayed with us and, despite what she was carrying, continued through the day and joined in with the festivities as best she could.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eStanding Against Loneliness was created to bring people together, but moments like this showed me what those words really meant.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eA community isn’t just there to celebrate with you when life is good. After eight months on the road, I finally had the chance to show my friends and family just how far I’d come. The crowd was an incredible cross-section of people — some who had never met me before, friends and family who knew the journey well, and, remarkably, people from around the country who happened to be holidaying in Newquay that day and had attended my events elsewhere along the tour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThat evening, when I finally made it down to the beach with my new love in tow, I felt a sense of relief unlike anything I’d experienced before.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI’d done it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eWhat an incredible journey this had been, and undoubtedly one of the most important journeys of my life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFour months later, my pursuit of happiness continues.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI painted her while in the throes of heartbreak. Although it wasn’t meant to be, she taught me so much.
