Hastings was a fun and powerful event. I held it in the middle of St Andrew’s Mews, a closed-off forecourt surrounded by local shops, and we were kindly gifted the use of one of the empty shops to display all of the pieces I had created on the tour so far.

Hastings has a very special and unique community. It’s full of creatives, partygoers, colourful characters and, like many towns I visited, people who seem a little lost and in need of connection.

Earlier in the year, I had visited Hastings to promote the tour. It happened to be Pirate’s Day, and while I was there I met a brilliant character called Pirate Pete. Sitting proudly on his shoulder was a little sun conure called Mango.

When it came time to complete the Hastings painting, I decided to honour Pirate Pete by painting his beautiful bird.

Then something rather strange happened.

Not long after I had finished the painting, I was on the streets of Newquay promoting the exhibition and selling my work when I met a lovely lady. She stopped to look at Mango and told me that her daughter would absolutely love to see the piece.

When her daughter arrived, she told me a story.

Some time before, she had met a sun conure and shared a really special moment with it. The little bird had nestled into her hair and completely captured her heart.

The bird’s name was Mango.

Out of all the birds, all the names and all the people I could have met, somehow this painting had found someone with her own connection to a sun conure called Mango.

Her mum decided there and then (after a short discussion with her Husband) to secretly buy the painting as a gift for thier daughter’s 21st birthday.

And if you’re her daughter, standing here at my pre-exhibition leaving party in Newquay reading this description right now, this is the moment you discover that Mango belongs to you.
