Mikey’s Bee is a very special piece indeed.
While I was in Thurso, I met the lovely Allana, who works for Mikey’s Line, a suicide prevention charity named in memory of a young lad called Mikey, who sadly is no longer with us.
Mikey had two bee tattoos on his knees, which became the emblem for the organisation. The bee now stands as a symbol of the incredible and life-saving work they do supporting people through dark times.
Allana collaborated with me at the Thurso event and again during my time in Inverness. She kindly arranged for me to spend a couple of days at a market promoting Splat & Splash, where I created the background of this artwork with the help of Christmas shoppers passing by.
She also invited me to the Mikey’s Line anniversary Christmas party, where I hosted a pop-up silent disco in the middle of a busy shopping centre.
When someone suggested that I paint a bee on this piece, it instantly felt right.
I think we can all agree, it was a very good idea. :)
